Dennis R. Winston uses woodcut printmaking to explore themes of African American culture and identity.
A Virginia-based artist and educator, he holds degrees from Norfolk State University and the University of Richmond, with additional post-graduate studies at the University of Colorado and Virginia Commonwealth University. Winston's career spans prestigious teaching positions at institutions like the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia State University, where he also contributed to arts education at the Governor’s School of South Carolina. His artwork is featured in educational series and publications such as “African American Artists: Past and Present” and “Below the Surface; Ethnic Echoes in America’s Modern and Contemporary Art”. His woodcut prints are housed in numerous private and public collections, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, University of Virginia Medical Center, and Capital One Corporation. Winston has received public arts commissions from the City of Richmond and an artist fellowship award from the Virginia Commission of the Arts. Presently, he is an active member of One/Off Printmakers, emphasizing his commitment to the art of printmaking and its cultural significance.
