Stanley Whitney uses abstract visual language and chromatic experimentation to explore the interplay between color and geometry.
Whitney studied at the Kansas City Art Institute before earning his MFA from Yale School of Art in 1972. Initially diverging from expectations focused on racial and cultural identity themes, Whitney's early works featured patches of color set against empty spaces, emphasizing the power of gesture and daily drawing practice. Whitney’s work is in the collections of the Architettura Arte Moderna, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Yale University’s Art Gallery.
