IN COLOR: MATTHEW LANGLEY

Apr 5 - 30, 2019

Matthew Langley says of his practice, “The exploration of color has become a primary focus of my work, which is instinctual, as opposed to a strict adherence to color theory. The outcome carries with it a transparency. I want the viewer to see the decisions made as well as the process and final results.

Broadly speaking, I improvise like a jazz musician; that is, the experimentation is handled inside the structure of the overall work, playing off a starting point and extrapolating ideas that emerge as I paint, giving way to multiple markers that observe, comment and reflect the decisions made.”

Matthew Langley’s work is included in the The International Museum of Collage, Assemblages and Construction, The Doris Patz Collection at the University of Maryland, and the Capital One collection. Born in Alexandria, Virginia, he currently lives and works in New York City.
